What Is SIM Swap Fraud?
SIM swap fraud (also called SIM hijacking or SIM splitting) occurs when someone tricks your mobile carrier into transferring your phone number to a SIM card they control.
Once they have your number, they can:
Bypass SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA)
Receive password reset codes for your accounts
Take control of your bank, email, or cryptocurrency apps
Before you know it, they have moved your funds or crypto assets.
According to a 2024 fraud landscape report by Cifas, unauthorized SIM swap cases in the U.S. surged by over 1,000% — with amounts stolen exceeding $6 million in a single year.
How SIM Swap Fraud Works
1. Collecting Your Personal Information
Scammers gather your personal data through phishing emails, malware, data breaches, or even your social media profiles. They use this information to bypass your mobile carrier's security checks.
2. Contacting Your Mobile Network
The scammer impersonates you, claiming their phone was lost or stolen. They request a new SIM card and ask to transfer your number to it.
3. The SIM Swap
Your mobile carrier mistakenly approves the transfer. Your number is now active on a new SIM card — in the scammer's hands. Your own phone signal disappears.
4. Accessing Your Accounts
They use your phone number to reset passwords, receive verification codes, and log into your bank, cryptocurrency exchange, email, or social media accounts.
In many cases, victims do not realize what happened until their accounts are locked or they receive suspicious login alerts.
A Princeton University study on SIM swapping found that 39 out of 50 SIM swap attempts against major U.S. carriers were successful — demonstrating how vulnerable networks are to social engineering attacks.
